Combining Passive Acoustics and Environmental Data for Scaling Up Ecosystem Monitoring: A Test on Coral Reef Fishes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ecological surveys of coral reefs mostly rely on visual data collected by human observers. Although new monitoring tools are emerging, their specific advantages should be identified to optimise simultaneous use. Based the goodness-of-fit linear models, we compared potential passive acoustics and environmental for predicting structure reef fish assemblages in different biogeographic settings. Both types complemented each other. Globally, acoustic showed relatively low added value assemblage structures. The predictions were best distribution abundance among functional entities (i.e., proxies groups, grouping species that share similar eco-morphological traits), simplest combining two when considering diet level water column species. Our study demonstrates Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) improves assessment used tandem with using alone. Such combinations can help responding current conservation challenge improving our surveying capacities at increased spatial temporal scales, facilitating identification priority management areas.

Applying data fusion techniques for benthic habitat mapping and monitoring in a coral reef ecosystem
Accurate mapping and effective monitoring of benthic habitat in the Florida Keys are critical in developing management strategies for this valuable coral reef ecosystem. For this study, a framework was designed for automated benthic habitat mapping by combining multiple data sources (hyperspectral, aerial photography, and bathymetry data) and four contemporary imagery processing techniques (dat...
متن کاملNatural bounds on herbivorous coral reef fishes
Humans are an increasingly dominant driver of Earth's biological communities, but differentiating human impacts from natural drivers of ecosystem state is crucial. Herbivorous fish play a key role in maintaining coral dominance on coral reefs, and are widely affected by human activities, principally fishing. We assess the relative importance of human and biophysical (habitat and oceanographic) ...
متن کاملNutrient supply from fishes facilitates macroalgae and suppresses corals in a Caribbean coral reef ecosystem.
On coral reefs, fishes can facilitate coral growth via nutrient excretion; however, as coral abundance declines, these nutrients may help facilitate increases in macroalgae. By combining surveys of reef communities with bioenergetics modeling, we showed that fish excretion supplied 25 times more nitrogen to forereefs in the Florida Keys, USA, than all other biotic and abiotic sources combined. ...
متن کاملDistribution of coral reef fishes along a coral reef–seagrass gradient: edge effects and habitat segregation
Coral reefs and seagrass beds are often located adjacent to one another, but little is known about the degree to which their fish communities are interlinked. To determine whether coral reef fishes on the coral reef are interlinked with or segregated from fishes on adjacent seagrass beds, a 60 m coral reef–seagrass gradient was studied on the island of Zanzibar in the western Indian Ocean. Usin...
متن کاملPopulation Regulation of Coral Reef Fishes
Populations of reef fish are widely believed to be limited by availability of larval recruits, not by density dependent processes operating during and after settlement of young stages in the reef environment. Our research explores and challenges this thinking. We are utilizing field observations and experiments to determine what factors affect spatial distribution, abundance, and population dyn...
